Wider Community and Society
As well as its obligations towards particular groups of stakeholders such as beneficiaries, funders, contractors, regulatory bodies, etc. all voluntary and community organisations have obligations towards the wider community and society. These responsibilities should be reflected in your values, Code of Conduct and disciplinary rules, as well as specific policies on:
- Equality
- Diversity and Inclusion
- Good Relations
- Health & Safety
- Safeguarding
- Data Protection
- Disability Access
These policies should be up-to-date and regularly reviewed. Action plans should also be developed and implemented to ensure the policies are fully implemented.
Environmental responsibility [1]
We are all now all much more aware of the impact of how we live, work and travel is having on the environmental which potentially catastrophic consequences.
In addition to the environmental charities that are taking the lead on campaigning and lobbying on these issues, all community and voluntary organisations should be identifying ways that they can contribute to the sustainability of the planet.
Increasingly, we are required to report on how we are showing our responsibility towards the environment (especially if we are registered as a company limited by guarantee). But there are also risks to our reputation if we are found to be wanting in tackling our carbon footprint. On the positive side, it can help energise our staff, volunteers and supporters if we are seen to be a responsible green organisation that cares for the planet and our local environment.
