Keeping It Legal

Keeping It LegalKeeping It Legal

The Management Committee is responsible for ensuring that the organisation and its activities are kept within the law.

This includes complying with relevant legislation and statutory requirements. It does not mean the Management Committee must be an expert in all of these areas, but you do need to know when and where to access information and specialist advice.

This section is not intended to provide detailed legal advice or information. Rather, it highlights some key areas and signposts to the relevant agencies and to helpful resources for further detail. It is important that your group or organisation seeks expert advice, as appropriate, in relation to your organisation and its specific circumstances.

The Management Committee does not need to be expert in all areas of law, but does need to know when and where to access information and advice.

More on governing documents

Keeping to your constitution

Every group and organisation (unless they are just starting up) has some kind of governing document i.e. written rules that provide essential information on how the organisation and the Management Committee are to operate. The governing document is a legal document and must be complied with.
